The advantage of Auto Sear is its availability and ease of use. Much of the U.S. market comes from China, where manufacturers sell the devices directly to consumers on websites such as Alibaba and Wish.com, law enforcement officials said. Cars are often advertised as airsoft parts or tools and delivered with incorrect documentation and packaging labels. They can also be created using a 3D printer. Once in human hands, installation takes seconds and requires no technical knowledge or tools.
"It's very simple," said Rick Vasquez, former head of the ATF's firearms technical division. "The information is there, and the knowledge to do it is there."

During a five-month investigation in 2018, smugglers working at an auto repair shop showed agents their custom-made weapons and showed them how to install and use automatic heaters and other automatic conversion devices.
